Sometimes there are passages in the Bible that to modern eyes seem totally bizarre. "Why one earth is that in the Bible?" You might ask. This passage, Judges 21, is one of those. A tribe in Israel has been nearly exterminated because they went to war with the rest of Israel to protect the sodomites of Gibeah. Now there are only 600 men left. And all of Israel has vowed not to give their daughters to these men. Israel destroys a city that refused to fight, killing all the men, women, and children, except for the virgin women, and then directs the men of Benjamin to capture the remaining women they need from the young girls at Shiloh. Why did such strange things happen? Why did God, who gave us finite words to describe His infinite Self, give us this story to teach us about Him?
